The College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad organized a training workshop on Thursday, October 9, 2025, entitled “Combating Violent Extremism that Leads to Terrorism” in Al-Hurriya Hall, with the attendance of a number of Instructors and students.
The workshop aimed to promote students’ awareness about their role in facing extremism and terrorism, while highlighting social peace through educational initiatives and programs that enrich the values of citizenship, tolerance, and accepting others, in a way that complies with target 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is “peace, justice, and strong Institutions”
The workshop consisted of two major sessions. The first focused on Sport as an effective humanitarian tool in countering extremism, for its potential values of fair competition, mutual respect, and self-discipline. This session was presented by both Assist. Prof. Maysa Latif Salman and Lec. Lelo Daham Mohammed Saeed, who confirmed that sport represents a strategic tool to promote peace and social coherence.
The second session addressed art as a tool to combat extremism and terrorism, underscoring the relation between art and society, and how extremist speech can be converted into a visual aesthetic message that calls for peaceful coexistence and rejection of violence. This part was delivered by Assist. Lec. Dhamyaa Abdulelah Hussein and include a short movie illustrating how psychological Pressures can be treated by Art.
At the Conclusion of the Workshop, the College recommended that the students practice their sports and Artistic hobbies during their free time, to build a balanced personality and spread the culture of tolerance and accepting others among the youth.
