The establishment of the college dates back to the year 1959 AD, when there was an urgent need in the Iraqi state to prepare qualified people to delve deeper into the study of political science, equipped with a method of scientific thinking and the ability to conduct academic research and investigate the scientific truth in the field of political thought, political systems, the third world and international studies, so the (Department of Political Science) was established In the College of Arts by Prof. Dr. Fadel Zaki Muhammad, who was the head of the department at that time, then the need arose to prepare specialized staff to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, universities, international and regional organizations, and jobs related to media and public relations, so the department moved to a new college that was established in 1963 under the name (College of Economics and political science) and with the reorganization of the University of Baghdad in 1969, the Department of Political Science became part of the College of Law and Politics. In order to keep pace with the development taking place in international universities and to follow the path of scientific specialization, the department turned into a new independent college under the name (Faculty of Political Science) in 1987 AD, in order for students of political science to familiarize themselves with the principles, origins, foundations and rules of political science at the official and popular levels, and to graduate specialists who possess basic knowledge and the ability to managing state affairs at the local, national and international levels .
