On the first of October each year, the world pauses in appreciation and respect for older persons, recognizing their contributions, experiences, and wisdom that have shaped our present and laid the foundations for our future. The United Nations General Assembly declared this day in 1990 as an international occasion to reflect on the status and role of the elderly and to reaffirm the necessity of safeguarding their rights and ensuring a dignified life for them.

On this occasion, the College of Political Science – University of Baghdad affirms that caring for older persons is not merely a social duty, but a humanitarian and moral commitment that embodies respect for the value of the human being in all stages of life. This includes enabling them to enjoy their fundamental rights such as living with dignity and independence, receiving comprehensive healthcare, being protected from neglect and abuse, and participating actively in society while valuing their experiences as a source of knowledge and humanity.

Honoring older persons is an act of loyalty to a generation that contributed to shaping the present and a message to future generations about the importance of gratitude—by providing the care and respect they deserve, ensuring that old age remains a stage filled with security and dignity.
