The Department of Political Thought at the College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad held a seminar titled “The Dangers of the Drug Phenomenon in Iraq and Methods of Addressing It.”
A group of faculty members from the department, who moderated the seminar, pointed out that the spread of drugs in Iraq poses a serious challenge that threatens the fabric of society. Drug use and trafficking rates have risen significantly in recent years, negatively impacting security and social stability. They explained that the exacerbation of this phenomenon is due to a number of factors, most notably security disturbances, economic decline, and weak oversight mechanisms, in addition to external factors that have made Iraq a major transit point for drug smuggling operations.
At the end of the seminar, a number of recommendations were reached, most notably imposing stricter penalties on drug dealers and traffickers, strengthening border controls and land, sea, and air ports, and establishing specialized security units to combat drugs.
