The College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis entitled “The Role of Local Governments in Confronting the Challenges of Iraqi Environmental Security after 2003” by the student “Sarah Muhannad Omar” and under the supervision of Professor Dr. “Omar Juma Omran.”
The study addressed the role of local governments in facing the challenges of environmental security in Iraq, as all institutions and sectors participate in making an environmental security policy for the present and for the future. Despite the difficulties that Iraq suffers from, especially after 2003, globally, regionally, and locally, it was able to make the basic beginnings for building a successful environmental security policy, in cooperation with global and regional organizations and national efforts that reflect the importance of the role of local governments in creating a healthy and sustainable environment.
In light of this, the study reached several conclusions, the most important of which is that the political and economic changes in Iraq after 2003 had a significant impact on the state of environmental security, in addition to the importance and effectiveness of environmental security policies taken by local governments in improving and protecting the environment, in addition to that there are future challenges that require A continuous focus, such as improving environmental capabilities and enhancing cooperation between stakeholders.
Based on these conclusions, recommendations were made to improve the efforts of local governments in confronting the challenges of environmental security, including strengthening and improving environmental legislation at the local level to achieve a balance between economic development and environmental protection, as well as enhancing environmental awareness among the local community, including focusing on the importance of preserving natural resources and the impact of individual behaviors on the environment.
At the end of the viva, the student was given a grade of high “Very Good.” Wishing all college students success in their academic and professional lives.
