The thesis deals with the emergence and development of the Economic Community of West African States, known as ECOWAS, as it is established by West African countries to achieve economic development in the region. Its interests are limited to the economic aspect, but due to the development of the situation in its geographical region, its interests shifted to the political and security aspect. It relies on several defense security protocols, which makes it having an important role in achieving security and stability in the West African region, thus expanding its responsibilities, powers, and goals that it sought to achieve. Therefore, the thesis explains the role played by ECOWAS in the field of conflict settlement and peace-building in West Africa, and the model country is Sierra Leone, by focusing on its efforts in settling the Sierra Leone conflict as well as its efforts in building peace after the end of the conflict, standing at the various challenges that hinder its path in achieving security and peace building in the region and the country of Sierra Leone.
At the end of the viva, the researcher is awarded a master’s degree with a grade of high ” very good”. Wishing all students success in their academic and practical lives.
