The College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad discussed a dissertation entitled: Political Extremism and the Future of the Regime in Afghanistan (Taliban movement as a model) by the candidate “Heba Ali Hussein”.
The Dissertation deals with the concept of extremism and the reasons that drive Taliban group to adopt extremism, hatred, rejection the other who opposes it, and its practice of violence in presenting the ideas and beliefs it adopts. It is difficult for extremist movements to change their policies and the principles on which they are based. The phenomenon of extremism has preoccupied all societies and countries, because it threatens the security and stability of states, due to its serious social and political effects. The focus has been on political extremism, which represents ideas and political opinions whose supporters do not accept giving an opportunity for dialogue, or accept criticism and opinions that are contrary to them, and exaggerate their use of terror, intimidation and violence to impose their political ideas. Political extremism is a psychological readiness of the individual to adopt issues of a political nature and try to impose them on others, and it includes intolerant political activities that reject democracy in governance and the solution of political problems, and this is found in Taliban government in Afghanistan.
This study examined the emergence of the extremist Taliban movement in Afghanistan and how it was able to reach power and the reasons for its emergence in the nineties of the twentieth century, as well as the factors that prevented its continuation in power. The light was shed on the return of this extremist religious movement and the negotiations that were between it and the United States of America which ended with the signing of the peace agreement by the two sides in 2021. It also tackles the challenges that this movement faced after its return, referring to the most prominent scenes of the future of the regime in Afghanistan after the return of Taliban to power. It finally reached the most prominent conclusions and some recommendations that It may ensure that problems are resolved and corrected.
At the end of the viva, the researcher was awarded a doctorate degree with a grade of “very good”. Wishing all our students success in their academic and practical lives.
