On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10th of each year, the Human Rights Unit at the College of Political Science, University of Baghdad, affirms today, Saturday, October 10, 2026, that mental health is not merely an individual matter, but rather an inherent human right and an integral part of human dignity and quality of life.
The unit explains that mental health is linked to providing a supportive environment that respects human emotions, safeguards dignity, and allows individuals to access psychological care and support without discrimination or stigma. This enhances awareness of the importance of mental health and its role in the life of the individual and society.
Furthermore, the unit emphasizes that promoting mental health awareness and protecting it represents one of the facets of respecting human rights and serves as a basis for building a more balanced, cohesive, and humane society. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), which calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages; Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), by fostering equal opportunities to access psychological support and care; and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), which stresses the importance of protecting human rights and consolidating the principles of justice and fairness.
This occasion reaffirms the importance of spreading a culture of prioritizing mental health, embedding values of solidarity and respect, and reducing the stigma associated with seeking psychological help, thereby contributing to safeguarding human dignity and enhancing societal well-being
