The Department of International Studies at the College of Political Science, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop entitled “The Role of Sustainable Development and the Green Economy in Enhancing Iraqi National Security” on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Several faculty members from the department participated. The workshop addressed the importance of sustainable development and the green economy as two fundamental pillars for supporting economic and environmental stability. This is achieved through protecting natural resources and reducing environmental risks, thus contributing to balanced and sustainable development that supports the foundations of Iraqi national security and enhances its ability to confront developmental and environmental challenges. The workshop also emphasized the necessity of employing modern economic and environmental policies to achieve integration between economic development and environmental preservation, in line with the requirements for achieving comprehensive stability in Iraq. The workshop’s themes align with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). In conclusion, the workshop recommended strengthening the adoption of green economy policies and integrating sustainable development principles into national plans to support economic and environmental stability and enhance Iraq’s national security.
