The Human Rights Unit, in collaboration with the Women’s Affairs Unit at the College of Political Science, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop entitled ”Women’s Political Rights: Between Empowerment and Challenges.”
During her presentation of a research paper entitled “The Legal Framework for Women’s Political Rights,”the head of the Human Rights Unit, Assistant Professor Dr. Hamida Ali Jaber, highlighted the legal framework safeguarding women’s political rights and emphasized raising awareness of national and international laws that support their empowerment.
In her research paper titled “Challenges Facing Women’s Political Participation,”the head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, Lecturer Dr. Rana Abdul Hussein Ali, explained that despite legal advancements securing women’s political rights, they still face numerous challenges hindering their active participation in political life. These challenges range from social and cultural barriers that limit their role to structural obstacles within political institutions.

At the conclusion of the workshop, several recommendations were highlighted, most notably:
1.Political Awareness and Education: Launching educational campaigns to raise women’s awareness of their political rights and boost their confidence in their ability to participate effectively.
2. Addressing Social and Cultural Challenges: Implementing programs to combat stereotypes and promote a culture of gender equality in political engagement.
3. Encouraging Academic Research:Supporting academic studies on women’s political participation to identify obstacles and develop effective solutions to enhance their role.
The workshop underscored the importance of continued collaboration between academic institutions and civil society to advance women’s political empowerment and overcome existing challenges.
