Political Thought Department at the College of Political Science in the University of Baghdad held a workshop entitled “The Growing Drug Phenomenon in Iraq… Causes and Treatments,” under the patronage of the Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Adel Al-Budaiwi.
The head of the Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Mona Hamdi Hikmat, indicated that the phenomenon of drug growth in Iraq is one of the dangerous phenomena affecting society, as it has left several effects at the level of the state, the family, and the individual, explaining that a real analysis of the phenomenon must be done to know the dangers of drugs on security and humanity from one side, then determine the legal criminal responsibility on drug trade perpetrators, in order to reduce and contain it as quickly as possible.
In light of this, a number of instructors presented research papers through which they reached a number of recommendations, the most prominent of which is that awareness of the harms of drugs must be strengthened and people must be made aware of the dangers they entail. In addition to the need to improve legislation related to drugs and tighten penalties on dealers, smugglers, and users; Also, there is a need to provide effective treatment programs for drug users and addicts.
