The College of Political Science at the University of Baghdad hosts the defense of the Master’s thesis titled:<\/span><\/strong>
\n“Risk Management Strategies: The Challenge and Response to Conflicts Arising from Climate Changes,”<\/span><\/strong>
\npresented by Master’s student Mustafa Thair Thabit, in the Dr. Jihad Al-Hassani Hall, in the presence of an elite group of professors, researchers, and specialists.<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe thesis consists of three chapters and addresses the issue of conflicts resulting from climate changes as one of the most prominent contemporary challenges facing the international system, amid escalating environmental, economic, and social impacts of climate change and the resulting threats to security and stability, particularly in fragile and impoverished regions.<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe thesis seeks to analyze risk management strategies associated with climate conflicts, clarify the nature of challenges obstructing national, regional, and international responses, and evaluate adapted adaptation mechanisms and environmental governance to mitigate their repercussions, thereby enhancing the capacity of states and societies to confront growing climate risks.<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe study adopts the inductive approach and the descriptive-analytical approach, along with the historical approach, while utilizing several explanatory approaches in international relations and political environment to understand the interactive relationship between climate change and escalating conflicts, as well as to analyze its dimensions and implications for security and stability.<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe findings of the thesis show that climate change is not a direct cause of conflicts, but rather acts as a risk multiplier that deepens political, economic, and social fragility, especially in the developing Global South. The results also demonstrate a deficit in international responses due to diverging interests between the industrialized Global North and the developing Global South, alongside weak mechanisms of climate justice and environmental financing, which limits the effectiveness of international efforts in addressing climate challenges.<\/span><\/strong>
\nThe thesis emphasizes the importance of adopting comprehensive risk management strategies based on enhancing international cooperation, achieving sustainable development, supporting adaptation capacities, and consolidating the concepts of environmental governance and environmental peacebuilding as a fundamental entry point to reduce climate change-related conflicts and promote security and stability at national, regional, and international levels.<\/span><\/strong>

\nFollowing an in-depth scientific discussion and the student’s presentation and comprehensive responses to the committee’s observations, the committee decides to accept the thesis and awards him the Master’s degree with a grade of “Very Good”.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
