The Department of Political Thought at the College of Political Science \u2013 University of Baghdad organized, on Monday, February 10, 2026, a scientific workshop entitled \u201cThe Green Economy and Its Role in Promoting Sustainable Development,\u201d at Dr. Jihad Al-Hassani Hall, with the participation of the department\u2019s faculty members.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop addressed the concept of the green economy as a modern approach to achieving sustainable development by linking economic growth with environmental protection and the realization of social justice. It also highlighted the opportunities for transitioning from the traditional economy to the green economy, as well as the challenges associated with this transition in light of current environmental and economic changes.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop aimed to highlight the importance of the green economy in supporting pathways of sustainable development and to clarify its role in achieving a balance between the requirements of economic growth and the preservation of natural resources. It also presented scientific perspectives that contribute to strengthening sustainable development policies, in a manner consistent with the requirements of environmental and economic security.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The themes of the workshop are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action, given that the green economy serves as an effective tool for addressing environmental and economic challenges and enhancing social stability.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants affirmed a set of recommendations emphasizing the importance of integrating the concept of the green economy into economic, environmental, and educational policies; supporting scientific research and specialized workshops in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable resource management; and encouraging partnerships between universities and the public and private sectors to support the green transition. The recommendations also stressed the importance of enhancing public awareness of environmental sustainability and its impact on achieving comprehensive development. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to incorporate the green economy within human security approaches, to consider climate change and resource scarcity as non-traditional security challenges, and to support green projects as a source of social stability, as well as to strengthen environmental governance in line with the Iraqi National Security Strategy and its long-term objectives.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
