The Political Thought Department and the University Psychological Counseling Unit at the College of Political Science \u2013 University of Baghdad organized, on 18 November 2025, a workshop entitled \u201cDrugs and Their Impact on Political Stability and Community Security,\u201d held in Dr. Jihad Al-Hassani Hall, with the participation of a number of the department\u2019s faculty members.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop was presented by Assistant Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdul-Karim Abdul-Wahab, Assistant Prof. Dr. Ali Malik Al-Shook, Dr. Alia Abdul-Ameer Abdul-Majeed, and Assistant Lecturer Rawaa Khadum Farhood, who addressed in their lectures the increasing drug phenomenon in Iraqi society and its direct effects on community security and the structure of the state.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop highlighted the relationship between the spread of drugs and the rise in crime and violence rates, accompanied by a decline in the rule of law and the erosion of citizens\u2019 trust in institutions, in addition to the impact of this phenomenon on political stability due to its association with corruption, organized crime, and weakened border control.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop also discussed the social and economic factors contributing to the expansion of the phenomenon, most notably poverty, unemployment, weak family awareness, and the need for greater coordination among educational, health, and security institutions to implement effective preventive programs.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The workshop concluded with a number of recommendations, most notably: promoting good governance, strengthening state institutions, launching awareness and development programs to reduce addiction, and activating regional and international partnerships in line with the Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
